VIDEO: Set pieces give Ramapo county title over Bergen Catholic | ||

Each of the last two years, Ramapo suffered disappointment in the Bergen County boys' soccer final. The Green Raiders can thank their success on set pieces for their championship in 2012. Scoring all three goals on restarts, Ramapo topped Bergen Catholic 3-1 to capture the title. Sean Ethridge scored twice, and Mike Taranto assisted on all three goals.
It's the ninth county title in school history for Ramapo, and the seventh under head coach Evan Baumgarten. Taranto set up the only goal of the first half on a free kick, which Ethridge headed deftly past the Crusaders' keeper. Bergen Catholic had plenty of early chances, but couldn't convert until after halftime when Thomas Hogue deflected one over the goalie to tie the game. A short time later, though, Taranto again set up Ethridge on a free kick, and Ramapo was in front to stay. The Raiders added one more off a long throw-in by Taranto, with Mike Gostkowski heading it home. Ramapo remains undefeated at 16-0-1. Bergen Catholic, which had been unbeaten in its previous 11 games, falls to 10-4-2. For sports video highlights of this Bergen County boys' soccer final, click play in the box at left. |
