Northern Highlands wasn't perfect in its Bergen County tournament final against IHA. But the Highlanders were good enough to remain perfect on the season and win a second straight county championship. With two early goals off long throw-ins, Northern Highlands blanked the Blue Eagles 2-0 at Indian Hills High School.
Madison Holleran and Clare Shea had the goals. Both came off assists by Jackie Reyneke, the 6'3" defender whose throw-ins are the envy of every other soccer team in New Jersey--boys' and girls' alike. The Highlanders had plenty of chances to increase their scoreline, but were frustrated by the goalposts and IHA goalie Taylor Lupi, who ended up with 10 saves. The Blue Eagles didn't have many scoring chances, but they got a golden opportunity early in the second half. Highlands goalie Brooke Holle charged out to smother the shot by Camyrn Garcia and the defending champs were in charge the rest of the way. Top-seeded Northern Highlands is now 18-0 and looking to repeat as state champions as well. IHA, the third seed, falls to 12-5.
