Cliffside Park captured its first-ever Bergen County boys' soccer title on Friday night, defeating Don Bosco Prep 1-0. The Red Raiders have been waiting years for this night, but the last 15 minutes of the final probably felt even longer. Don Bosco poured shot after shot at the Cliffside Park net in the final minutes of the game, but somehow the Raiders survived. Goalie Edgar Argueta made a number of tremendous saves, but the Ironmen also missed a few golden chances and got a few unlucky bounces as well.
The Red Raiders scored the game's only goal less than three minutes into the second half. Francisco Flores sent a pass to Jose Pena, who headed it beautifully into the path of Gabriel Donato. The senior captain and four-year starter hammered the shot past the charging keeper. Donato would later suffer a cut on his head while contesting a ball in the air, but return to the field with his head wrapped in bandages--coach Jim Fucci joked after the game that Donato looked like a mummy one night after Halloween. Cliffside Park controlled things well for about the next 20 minutes, but the final quarter-hour was racked with tension. When the whistle finally blew, hundreds of students raced onto the field at Indian Hills High School to celebrate with the team. With the win, the Red Raiders improve to 19-0 on the season. Don Bosco is 14-3-2. For sports video highlights of this Bergen County boys' soccer high school championship match, click play in the box at left. |
