It took just one casual-looking flick of the foot to lift Northern Highlands to sectional glory and end the incredible Cinderella story of the Wayne Hills boys' soccer team. Cal Portnoy scored less than two minutes into the first overtime to give the Highlanders a 2-1 victory in the North 1, Group III boys' soccer final. His shot was perfectly placed over the Patriots' keeper and touched off a wild celebration on the Northern Highlands field.
Northern Highlands had the better of play overall, but Wayne Hills still had a real chance to pull off yet another big upset. The teams exchanged goals in the first half, Kyle Bissell for Highlands and Tyler Kulcsar for the Patriots. There were only a few serious scoring threats in the second half, and a penalty shootout seemed a real possibility. But Portnoy's goal off an assist from Rudy Mamary brought the game to an abrupt end. It's the first sectional title in 13 years for Northern Highlands, which came in as the second seed. Goalie Alec Lam had six saves for the Highlanders, who are now 18-2-2 on the season, and will meet Chatham in the state Group III semifinals on Tuesday evening in Millburn. Wayne Hills goalie Grant Kelly made five saves. The Patriots, who were the surprise winners of the Passaic County tournament and shocked top seed Ramapo in the sectional semifinals, end the season 16-5-2.
