Northern Highlands is back in the girls' soccer Group III state final after a hard-fought semifinal victory over West Morris. Clare Shea's goal was the game-winner in the 2-1 triumph. Hana Kerner also scored for the Highlanders and Kayla Klatt made five saves. Morgan Busacca and Casey Richards recorded assists.
The win extends Northern Highlands' unbeaten streak to 71 games, covering the past three seasons. That streak includes the past two Group III state championships. The Highlanders (21-0-1) will try to make it three in a row when they play Toms River South on Saturday. West Morris got a goal from Madison Schmitt to tie the game late in the first half. Sydney Sapir sent a cross through the goalmouth, which Kate Willsey deflected to Schmitt. The Wolfpack had a number of good opportunities in the second half, but couldn't get anything past Klatt. Her toughest save came on a long blast by Brooke Carty, which the goalie was forced to punch over the crossbar. West Morris goalie Ilissa Webb made 12 saves. The Wolfpack finishes the season 19-3-3, including the sectional title and a co-championship in the Morris County tournament.
