An overtime goal by Izzy Mendez pushed Montclair Kimberley past its crosstown rival Montclair in the semifinals of the Essex County field hockey tournament.

Mendez scored off a feed from Gina Guccione on a penalty corner more than seven minutes into sudden death. The goal gave MKA a win that had slipped through its fingers with just seconds left in regulation.

The Cougars controlled much of the first half and cashed in on a goal by Alex Reynolds. But Montclair goalie Julie Schreiber helped keep it a one-goal game heading into halftime.

In the second half, the Mounties had several good scoring chances, including a shot that hit the crossbar. But they still trailed in the final minute until Rachel Mann scored on a blast from the top of the circle off a corner to force the overtime.

Molly Peek made three saves for third-seeded MKA, which advances to the county finals against top seed West Essex. The Knights rolled by Glen Ridge 6-0 in the other semifinal.
