Using blistering speed and solid finishing skills, Irvington scored a stunning 7-2 triumph over Montclair Kimberley in the first round of the Essex County boys' soccer tournament. Emilus Lormil led the Knights, scoring four goals and adding a pair of assists. Vincent Fernandes added three goals and an assist for 12th-seeded Irvington.
Little suggested that this kind of result was imminent heading into the contest. Irvington had a strong 7-1 record, but had played mainly lesser competition. The Knights needed overtime to beat Bloomfield Tech in the preliminary round just to reach this game. Meantime, MKA had been inconsistent, but had mostly performed well against the toughest competition in Essex County. The Cougars even beat Seton Hall Prep, which at the time was ranked the #1 team in all of New Jersey. But against the Knights, MKA was victimized time and again on counter-attacks and long balls over the defense. Ryan Fennelly had both MKA goals on set pieces in the first half, as the Cougars rallied to within 3-2 after conceding three quick goals. Michel Charledrens had three assists for Irvington, and goalie Jules Delince came up with a number of key saves. The Knights now play fourth seed Millburn as they look to keep their unlikely ECT run going.
