Taking advantage of its own opportunities while denying scoring chances for its opponent, Montclair Kimberley captured the Prep B state field hockey championship with a 4-0 win over Morristown-Beard. Paige Pacifico scored three times for the top-seeded Cougars, who defended their championship from last year. Gina Guccione had a goal and three assists and Molly Peek made six saves.
The second-seeded Crimson actually had more opportunities to score in the first half, but Peek came up with several key stops. Morristown-Beard also had a goal disallowed for a violation. At the other end, MKA was taking advantage of its opportunities. Pacifico scored all three of her goals in that first half, twice deflecting in drives by Guccione and once poking in a rebound after a Guccione shot was stopped. The second half would be different, with the Cougars controlling most of the play. MKA tacked on a fourth goal when Guccione scored off a corner, and the defense never allowed Morristown-Beard any real hope of a comeback. Montclair Kimberley is 16-4-1 while the Crimson falls to 15-4. For sports video highlights of this Prep B state final field hockey game, click play in the box at left. |
