Glen Ridge is back in the Group I girls' soccer state final, but it wasn't easy. Tomi Kennedy's goal in the second overtime lifted the Ridgers to a 2-1 win over New Milford in an exciting semifinal on a cold night. Kennedy knocked in a pass from Shannon Marhan just 36 seconds into the second extra session. Marhan scored the opening goal for Glen Ridge with only 10 seconds left in the first half.
The second half saw plenty of opportunities at both ends, with New Milford cashing in when Alexis Monroy scored off a great feed from Nicole Garcia. While it seemed that someone would likely score before the end of regulation, neither side could break through. But Kennedy's strike prevented a penalty-kick shootout to decide the state final berth. Glen Ridge goalie Ryanne Ege had eight saves. The Ridgers will seek their second consecutive Group I state championship on Saturday when they meet Shore Regional at The College of New Jersey. Autumn Rogers had five saves for the Knights. New Milford ends up 16-6 after a season that saw the school win its first-ever girls' soccer sectional title.
