With a couple of starters out injured and coming off a series of tough games, the Montclair girls' soccer team appeared vulnerable heading into its Top 20 showdown with Nutley. Appearances can be deceiving.
With a major boost from its younger players, Montclair rolled to a convincing 4-0 win over the Maroon Raiders. Four different players scored, including a pair of freshmen, for the Mounties, who came into the game ranked #5 in New Jersey. Lucia Surraco, Sophie Palmer-Foster and freshman Rebecca Van Siclen scored in the first half as Montclair built a three-goal lead. Fiona Tubiana, another frosh, finished off a fantastic solo run early in the second half to pretty much secure the win for the Mounties. Starting goalie Gabby Isola had three saves for Montclair, and reserve Ming Palling-Goetz made one as the duo shared the shutout. Rachel Nichols had a busy day in net for Nutley, making a dozen saves. The Raiders, who were ranked 17th in the state entering the game, suffered their second straight shutout loss as they fall to 11-4. Montclair is now 12-1.
