The big favorite in the Essex County boys' lacrosse tournament got a real challenge in its semifinal-round game. But Seton Hall Prep rose to that challenge, foiling an upset bid from Montclair Kimberley to secure an 8-5 win. Brian Tevlin had two goals and an assist for Seton Hall, and Sean Leahey also scored twice. Jack Rutter contributed three assists for the Pirates, while goalie Colin Kirst came up with 14 saves in another strong performance.
Jack Gorelick, Jack Sarson, Griffin Westlin and Sean Quinn all had goals for Seton Hall. Five different players scored for MKA, including goalie Rob Strain, who notched his second goal of the season. Strain also made 14 saves in net. Jason Gertz and Max Hall had a goal and an assist apiece. Rob's brother Joe Strain and Erik Zeug also scored. The fourth-seeded Cougars fall to 9-4. Seton Hall, the top seed, is now 10-4. The Pirates will go for their fourth consecutive county title against a surprise opponent, sixth seed Montclair, in the final.
