In a game that saw both teams have numerous scoring chances denied, it took an unusual deflection for Whippany Park to earn a field hockey state playoff win over Butler. Marissa Kowalskie tipped the ball over the goalie in the first overtime to lift the Wildcats to a 2-1 victory in the first round of North 1, Group I play. Kowalskie's goal came off a drive by Alison Gleichmann after the first penalty corner of the 7-on-7 overtime session. It was the second goal of the game for the Whippany Park senior, who also tied the score on a breakaway early in the second half.
Rachel Zabelka scored off a corner in the first half for Butler. Bulldogs' goalie Reba Smith was spectacular in the cage, making 19 saves to keep her team in the game. Whippany Park goalie Lisa Foran had 10 stops, as the Wildcats managed to keep Butler's explosive Amber Haslett off the scoreboard. Haslett, who had 32 goals this season, did have several close calls including one shot that hit the post. The Wildcats improve to 9-10-1. Sixth-seeded Whippany Park will now visit Kittatinny, the third seed, in the quarterfinal round next Tuesday. Butler, the 11th seed, finishes the season at 7-14.
