With pitcher Ally Frei in the circle, the last three years have been special for the High Point softball program. Fittingly, Frei ended her career by leading the Wildcats to another state title. Allowing just four hits and striking out 17, Frei was just good enough to push High Point to a 2-1, eight-inning win over Robbinsville in the Group II state final in Toms River. Autumn Smith doubled and scored on an infield error in the eighth inning to break a 1-1 deadlock. High Point had grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when Carly Satter singled and later scored on Frei's groundout. But Robbinsville, which was looking for its third state title in the last four years, tied the game in the third. Megan Hevey singled in Leanna Gearhart, the first run allowed by Frei in the state tournament this year. The Ravens had a great chance to take the lead in the sixth, putting runners at first and third with one out. But Frei struck out the next two hitters to escape the jam. High Point captured its second state championship in three years. The Wildcats finished 28-2 on the year, also winning a league title and the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex tournament. Robbinsville ended up 26-4. To see the sports video highlights of this New Jersey high school girls' softball state tournament final, click play in the box at left.
