VIDEO: Madison wins epic sectional final, tops West Essex in 2 OT
Written by - Saturday, November 8 2014

Two great teams gave everything they had, and a little more, with the season on the line. The North 1, Group II field hockey sectional final was one to remember, and Madison walked away victorious, a 5-4 double-overtime winner over defending champ West Essex.

Elizabeth Romano blasted home the game-winning goal off a corner early in the second overtime to give the Dodgers the victory. Madison trailed 2-1 at halftime but scored three straight goals to take a 4-2 lead, only to see West Essex rally and force overtime.

Romano scored twice for #2 seed Madison, as did Stephanie Dellavia. Both also recorded assists. Kaitlyn DaSilva had the other Dodger goal and notched a pair of assists.

Gabby Girardi had two goals and an assist for West Essex, the top seed. Lia Sinisi scored once and had two assists, and Alyssa Menendez also scored for the Knights.

Remarkably, both teams gave up more goals in this one game than they had the entire season. Madison had conceded just three goals in 18 previous matches, while West Essex had been scored upon only four times in 21 games.

Emilie Flamme made 11 saves for Madison while Paige Innarella stopped 12 for West Essex. Both goalies came up big in the first overtime, which saw wild, end-to-end action as the teams played with only seven players a side.

West Essex, the defending Group II state champion, sees a 20-game winning streak snapped. The Knights' first loss of the season brings their campaign to an end at 20-1-1.

Madison improves to 18-1. The Dodgers will meet Section 2 champion Summit in the Group II state semifinals on Wednesday evening at Johnson High School in Clark.
