Madison knew it needed to play its 'A' game to knock off Kinnelon in the Morris County softball tournament. With flawless fielding, clutch pitching and one big hit, the Dodgers delivered the goods.

Caitlyn Massaro pitched an eight-hit shutout and Stephanie Deeb hit a tie-breaking home run to lead Madison to a 2-0 victory in the first round of the tournament. The 11th-seeded Dodgers earned the upset win despite being outhit by the Colts.

Deeb's homer in the fourth inning came after Kinnelon pitcher Megan Beiermeister had retired the first 10 batters she faced. The ball carried over the center-field fence, perhaps helped slightly by the strong breeze blowing at Kinnelon Recreation Park.

Madison made it 2-0 in the seventh when Mitra Sharif's bunt brought in a runner from third base.

The Colts had baserunners in every inning against Massaro, but the sophomore consistently found ways to wriggle out of trouble. She was greatly helped by Madison's defense, which made all the plays and managed to cut down the lead runner on the basepaths on several occasions.

Massaro earned her first shutout, striking out three batters while walking one.

Beiermeister had seven strikeouts for sixth-seeded Kinnelon. Julia Balick recorded two hits. The Colts fall to 8-4.

Madison, now 7-5, will get a surprising home game in the tournament quarterfinals against 19th seed West Morris, which upset third-seeded Montville.
