This one might taste just a little sweeter for Delbarton. After failing to win the state ice hockey title the last two years, the Green Wave returned to the summit with a 3-1 triumph over Christian Brothers Academy in the final. The win ends what for Delbarton passes as a lengthy title drought, and avenges losses to CBA in last year's state final and this year's Gordon Cup final.
The Green Wave won despite only registering eight shots on goal in the entire contest. Tyler Kobryn scored the opening goal midway through the first period, which saw just seven total shots. The action picked up in the middle period, as CBA tied the game on a goal by Liam Noonan. Delbarton regained the lead about five minutes later, as John Farinacci picked up the puck after a rush by his brother Anthony and fired a wrist shot over the goalie's shoulder. Moments after that, the Green Wave got a power play, and quickly cashed in as Nick Siffringer sent the puck across to Danny Farr, who roofed it over the sliding netminder. With the two-goal lead, Delbarton went to an conservative defensive style. With the official scorer at the Prudential Center a bit stingy in recording shots on goal, Delbarton did not register a single shot on net for the final 21 minutes of the game. But the Green Wave defense was up to the task. The Colts only had three shots in the third period, and 13 total for the game. Goalie Troy Kobryn made 12 saves to earn the win. CBA, the third seed in the Non-Public tournament, ends its season with a 25-5 record. The Colts had won state titles the last two seasons, taking the crown outright last season after sharing it with Morristown-Beard in 2014. For Delbarton, this is its 11th overall state title, the most in New Jersey hockey history. The Wave finishes 25-3-2 and is expected to be named the #1 team in the state.
