That showdown came in the Panthers' first state game, and Pequannock handled the challenge with little trouble. Holly Klecha scored twice as the Panthers knocked off Pompton Lakes 3-0 to advance to the sectional semifinals Friday against Mountain Lakes.
After a slightly slow start, Pequannock took control of the game and broke through on a late first-half goal by Dana Nielsen. Klecha added her two tallies after halftime, while goalie Bridget Mertrud was credited with nine saves. Amy Cahill was tremendous in the cage for Pompton Lakes, she had 15 saves and kept the game from being more one-sided. For video highlights from this game, click play in the box at left.
