Nine Wayne-area wrestlers will make the trip to Atlantic City this coming weekend for the state finals after qualifying through Region tournaments. Two local grapplers will head to the state finals as Region champions after earning titles at the always-tough Region 1 tournament. Tyler Hrycak of Wayne Valley and Dave McFadden of DePaul were winners at the event held at Wallkill Valley High School.
Hrycak won the 120-pound title with a 4-3 decision over Peter Lipari of Lenape Valley. Just a short time later, McFadden captured the crown at 126 pounds by edging Joey Kratchovil of Warren Hills, 3-2. A third local wrestler also reached the Region 1 finals, but Anthony Landsberg of Wayne Valley suffered an upset loss to Kyle Stoll of High Point by a 3-2 score. Landsberg will still advance to Atlantic City but now must wrestle in the preliminary round. He'll be joined by three other wrestlers who earned third place at Region 1: Will Kui of DePaul (106 pounds), Nick DePalma of DePaul (182 pounds) and Robert Levine of Wayne Hills (220 pounds). Kui and Levine wrote similar scripts, losing in Friday's quarterfinals before winning three consolation bouts on Saturday, punching their tickets with pins in the third-place matches. Three other local wrestlers advanced from the Region 4 tournament, held at West Orange High School. Passaic Tech's Emmanuel Soriano reached the final at 220 pounds, but his chance for a Region title ended when he suffered what appeared to be a serious arm injury. Soriano was forced to default to Armand Cox of St. Peter's Prep, and will need to recover quickly in order to wrestle Friday in Atlantic City. Passaic Valley didn't place anyone in the finals, but did get four wrestlers into the final round of consolations. Two of those grapplers won to earn the coveted third-place spot: Anthony Cruz at 106 pounds and Nick Armagno at 160 pounds. The finals begin Friday night in Atlantic City with the preliminary round. The pre-quarterfinals follow, as Hrycak, McFadden and all the Region champs join the action. Saturday features quarterfinals, semifinals and a slew of wrestlebacks. On Sunday, wrestlers battle for final placings including the championship matches. |
