The Wayne Valley wrestling team had been waiting for this night for a long time. The Indians advanced to their first sectional final in 25 years, and did so by beating their personal nemesis, Northern Highlands. Wayne Valley scored a 34-24 triumph over the Highlanders to avenge three losses in the past five years in the state playoffs.
Wayne Valley won nine bouts but had only one pin, which came from Tyler Hrycak. Anthony Landberg won his 100th career match in rather odd fashion, as Northern Highlands chose to forfeit to him. The third-seeded Highlanders fall to 17-7. Wayne Valley, the #2 seed, is now 13-3. The Indians advance to meet top seed Paramus in the North Jersey, Section 1, Group III final. The winner of that match has a real shot to go after the Group III New Jersey state title in a wide open field this weekend.
