Jason Rivera fired a one-hitter to earn the win as Clifton knocked off Lakeland, 4-1. Rivera went the distance with nine strikeouts as the Mustangs picked up their second win of the season. Trailing by a 1-0 score, Clifton got all of its offense in a four-run third inning rally. Jack Garruto knocked in a pair of runs with a single to give the Mustangs the lead. Miguel DeLosSantos and Carlos Pineda followed with run-scoring singles to provide some breathing room.
Rivera did the rest, shutting down Lakeland over the final four innings. The right-hander allowed just a fourth-inning single and the only run scored was unearned. Lakeland got that run in the first inning. The lead-off batter reached on an error and moved up to third base, then scored on a sacrifice fly by pitcher Zach Querrazzi. Querrazzi pitched well except for the fourth-inning rally but took the loss. The Lancers, who opened the season with three straight wins, suffered their third consecutive defeat to fall to 3-3. Clifton is now 2-5. For sports video highlights of this New Jersey and Big North Conference high school baseball game, click play in the box at left. |
