Northern Highlands continued a strong start to its field hockey season with a victory over visiting Wayne Hills. The state-ranked Highlanders scored twice off corners in the second half to post a 3-1 home triumph. Fiona Walley knocked home both of the second-half goals, both times on assists from Lily Scheer. Northern Highlands outshot 17-3, but the game was tied until about 10 minutes into the second half.
Gabby Pontone put the Highlanders ahead in the first half when she converted a penalty stroke. But Wayne Hills fought back, and tied the game about nine minutes later when Jennifer Cantilli knocked in a deflected shot by Amanda LaGuardia. Wayne Hills goalie Rachel Vellis kept her team in the game, making 14 saves. The Patriots drop to 2-4 on the season. Victoria Marino had two saves for Northern Highlands. The Highlanders, ranked #19 in the state in a recent poll, improve to 6-0 with the win.
