The Wayne Hills boys' basketball team ended 2016 holding a trophy. Now the Patriots hope to experience more moments like that in the new year. Wayne Hills used a huge third quarter to pull away from host Ramapo to win the Coaches vs. Cancer holiday tournament, 64-47. With the win, the Patriots improve to 5-0 on the season, with none of the wins by less than nine points.
It was a balanced scoring effort from Wayne Hills in the tournament final. Justin Wills led the Patriots with 13 points, while Matt DiFiore and Joey Belli contributed 12 points apiece. Jason Modak was also in double digits with 10 points, while Justin Hodge scored seven and Patrick Gilmore had six. Wayne Hills led by two points at halftime before the 24-10 showing in the third quarter essentially put the game away. Jason Oppler and K.C. Hunt notched nine points apiece to lead Ramapo. The Green Raiders fall to 4-2 on the season. Wayne Hills, which fell in the semifinals of both the Passaic County and state sectional tournaments last winter, has stamped itself as a real contender for both titles this time around.
