Anyone who doubts the talent of Jabrill Peppers need only look at the highlights of Paramus Catholic's 44-6 win over Bergen Catholic to end the regular season. Peppers scored four touchdowns and created three turnovers to lead the Paladins. Peppers had a touchdown run early in the game, caught two touchdown passes from Steve Shanley, and then returned an interception 48 yards for a score just before halftime. Paramus Catholic took a 28-6 lead into the break and never looked back. Peppers added another interception and forced a fumble in the second half.
The Paladins won handily despite missing starting running back Keyon Washington, who was out with an injury. Ahmad Thomas took his place and ran for 130 yards and a touchdown. Bergen Catholic got a touchdown pass from Colin McGovern to Garrett Dickerson, which at the time put the Crusaders within 7-6. The Crusaders fall to 2-7 on the season, and will not play any further games. Bergen Catholic missed the state playoffs for the first time in 25 years, and the NJSIAA did not assign them a consolation game within New Jersey, instead suggesting they play an out-of-state team. But the Crusaders could not find a matchup this weekend and chose not to wait two weeks to play. Paramus Catholic concludes the regular season at 7-2. The Paladins are the top seed in the Non-Public Group IV state playoffs and host Notre Dame of Lawrenceville next weekend, with a potential rematch with Don Bosco Prep looming in the semifinals.
