Held in check for five innings, the Mount St. Dominic softball team put together a timely rally and put itself into the sectional final. The Lady Lions scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to push past DePaul, 3-1, in the North Non-Public A semifinals. Helyna Bissell had an RBI single to bring the go-ahead run across for Mount St. Dominic, while the other two runs scored on an error and a double steal.
Kelsey Oh allowed a run in the first inning, but the Lady Lions' freshman pitcher was strong the rest of the game. Oh allowed six hits and one walk, but struck out nine to get the victory. Sydney Fleming drove in the only run for DePaul. Pitcher Ashley LaGuardia kept the Lady Lions thoroughly in check until the fateful sixth inning, where some bad luck and a couple of sloppy plays cost the Spartans. Third-seeded DePaul finishes the season at 15-5; the Spartans won the Passaic County softball championship. Mount St. Dominic (27-4), the Essex County champs and second seed in the sectional tournament, meets top-seeded IHA in Tuesday evening's final. The game is scheduled for Ivy Hill Park in Newark.
