After 80 minutes of wide open, back-and-forth soccer, it took only one minute of overtime to decide the state playoff game between the Wayne Valley and Indian Hills girls. Imani Thompson slammed home a cross from Randi Smith on a free kick to give Wayne Valley a pulse-pounding 3-2 win. Indian Hills had forced the overtime by scoring with less than three minutes left in regulation.
Thompson scored twice for the Indians. Her goal early in the second half off a feed from Kylee Ramos gave Wayne Valley a 2-1 lead that nearly held up, despite a slew of chances for Indian Hills. But the Braves finally tied the score after a free kick was deflected off the post, and Lily DeMartino knocked home the rebound to tie the score. Bryne Heinowitz opened the scoring for Indian Hills in the first half. Wayne Valley responded on a goal by Jen Eitel to even things up before halftime. Wayne Valley goalie Brianna DeLuccia made 12 saves in this entertaining game with plenty of chances at both ends. Indian Hills, the 10th seed, concludes its season with a record of 6-11-2. Seventh seed Wayne Valley improves to 13-7. The Indians travel to face Demarest in the next round of the North 1, Group III states.
