After falling behind early, the Caldwell softball team rode a big inning to a victory over Ridgefield Park in the sectional quarterfinals. The Chiefs scored five times in the fourth en route to the 9-6 triumph. Christina Guarino had a double and a home run for Caldwell. Shannon Johnson went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Casey Ward also had two hits and drove in a run.
Gianna Genello delivered a double, the 200th hit of her high school career. That made her the all-time hits leader at Caldwell High School. Pitcher Cayla Lombardi allowed eight hits and four earned runs as she picked up the complete-game victory. Lombardi struck out four batters. For sixth-seeded Ridgefield Park, Dorian Capurso had three hits including a home run. Danielle Sinclair went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs. The Scarlets conclude the season at 16-9. Caldwell, the third seed in North 2, Group II, improves to 22-6. The Chiefs will travel to face #2 seed Parsippany in the sectional semifinals next week.
