|VIDEO: St. Joe's-Metuchen escapes upset-minded Ramapo|
St. Joseph of Metuchen came into its boys' basketball match-up with Ramapo as the clear favorite. But the Falcons, ranked in the Top 5 in the state of New Jersey, had to fight to escape with a victory over the Green Raiders.
Behind Tyus Battle and Breein Tyree, St. Joe's pulled out a 55-49 victory at the Tip-Off Hoop Group Challenge at Caldwell University. Battle, a senior headed to play next year at Syracuse, scored a game-high 19 points, including the 1,000th point of his high school career.
Tyree scored 12 points and added eight rebounds for the Falcons. Alanzo Frink contributed 10 points and Branislav Vujadinovic had eight for the winners.
Joe O'Hagan led Ramapo with 14 points. Matt Latka scored 10 points and added seven rebounds, and Jason Oppler also had 10 points for the Raiders.
Ramapo led after one quarter and trailed by only a basket at halftime. St. Joe's pushed the lead into double digits early in the fourth quarter, but Ramapo responded with a strong run to pull within a bucket at 50-48 with 40 seconds to go.
After a timeout, Tyree made the key play of the game, driving down court to hit a layup to push the lead back to four, and St. Joe's managed to hit enough foul shots to ice the win.
St. Joe's, ranked #5 in the state, is now 2-0. Ramapo falls to 1-1.
