Bergen Catholic is the overwhelming favorite to win another state wrestling title, but the Crusaders know they have to take care of business on the mat. They did just that in a 58-12 sectional semifinal win over Pope John. Scoring five pins and two technical falls, top seed Bergen Catholic won 11 of the 14 bouts. The victory moves the Crusaders into the North Non-Public A sectional final.
Wade Unger, Joe Grello, Kevin Mulligan, Danny DeLorenzi and Carmen Ferrante had the pins for Bergen Catholic. Nick Suriano and Brady Ford recorded technical falls. Pope John won three bouts, with Ryan Lucks scoring a pin. Andrew Nieves and Joseph Aragona won decisions for the fourth-seeded Lions, who are 19-4 this season. Bergen Catholic is 14-2 and unbeaten against New Jersey competition, and is #1 in the state. Its sectional final opponent, Delbarton, is ranked #3, but such is the level of the Crusaders' dominance that they are widely expected to win handily.
