The Passaic County boys' lacrosse tournament lived up to expectations, providing upsets and several thrilling games. The final didn't disappoint, either, with Wayne Valley barely hanging on for a 7-6 triumph over West Milford to claim the crown. The fourth-seeded Indians scored five straight goals in the second and third quarters to snag a 7-4 lead. But West Milford, the second seed, scored twice in the final quarter and very nearly tied the contest in the final moments.
Nick Irwin had two goals and two assists to lead Wayne Valley. Tom Pellegrino also scored twice and added an assist. Vincent Tedesco notched a goal and an assist for the Indians. Ryan Leonard and Chandler O'Rourke added goals. Wayne Valley goalie Nick Beninati made 10 saves, including a stop in the final seconds that preserved the win for his squad. Anthony Pellegrino scored three goals with one assist for West Milford. Dylan Pirro contributed a goal and two assists. Austin Hopler and Drew Kagdis also scored and Dan Cummings notched two assists. Kyle Little came up with 12 saves. After starting the season 0-6, West Milford entered this final, played at Wayne Hills High School, having won nine of its last 10 games. The Highlanders fall to 9-8. Wayne Valley pulled an upset in the semifinals when it knocked off top seed Lakeland. The Indians were 6-9 entering the county tournament, but won three straight one-goal games to capture their third county title.
