|VIDEO: Bergen Catholic starts fast, holds off Seton Hall Prep|
A six-goal spurt late in the first quarter gave Bergen Catholic a big lead in its boys' lacrosse state semifinal against Seton Hall prep. The Crusaders needed all of those goals, as they held off a furious late rally to pull out a 14-12 win.
With the win, second-seeded Bergen Catholic advances to the Non-Public A state finals against top seed Delbarton.
It looked like an easy win for the Crusaders when they built a 7-2 lead after one quarter and stretched it to 12-5 heading to the fourth. Seton Hall scored seven times in that final quarter, cutting the deficit to two with 1:34 to play. But Bergen Catholic won the next face-off and was able to run out the clock.
Dwayne Mattushik keyed the first-quarter surge, contributing three goals and one assist, all in the opening period. Shane Fable scored three times and had two assists for the Crusaders, and Trevor Weingarten also notched a hat trick.
Alex Borg scored twice for Bergen Catholic. A.J. Anderson and D.J. Kelly had a goal and an assist apiece, while Jeremy Magno also scored.
Crusaders goalie Matt DiScola made 14 saves.
Seton Hall, the third seed, got a five-goal effort from Griffin Westlin. Brian Tevlin and Jack Rutter notched two goals and one assist apiece.
Sean Leahey had a goal and two assists, while Jack Gorelick and Michael Mughetto also scored. Colin Kirst made 12 saves for the Pirates.
Seton Hall's season ends with a 15-5 record.
Bergen Catholic is now 15-6.
