VIDEO: Summit strikes in overtime, defeats Ridgewood in TOC final
Written by - Saturday, June 11 2016

The final of the girls' lacrosse Tournament of Champions lived up to everyone's expectations. But only one team could walk off the field happy, and with a goal early in the second overtime, it was Summit that earned the title.

Callie Humphrey scored 18 seconds into the the second extra period to give Summit an 11-10 win over Ridgewood. The Hilltoppers had erased a three-goal deficit in the second half to take the lead, only to see Ridgewood force overtime with a goal in the final seconds of regulation.

Sara Szynal scored five times for Summit, ranked #1 in the state but seeded second in the TOC. Humphrey had three goals for the Hilltoppers. Catherine Cordrey notched two goals and two assists, while Samantha Forsyth contributed a goal and an assist.

After trailing early, Ridgewood took charge of the game midway through the first half and built a 6-3 lead at the break. The Maroons led 9-6 with under nine minutes to play before Summit scored four goals in just over three minutes to snag the lead.

Lillie Kloak scored twice for Ridgewood, including the goal with 18 seconds left that forced overtime. Chelsea Trattner had two goals and an assist, and Alex Absey also scored twice.

Hannah Cermack contributed a goal and two assists, while Katie Bourque had a goal and an assist. Claire Smesko and Cat Roxas also scored for the Maroons.

Ridgewood, whose only previous in-state loss came against Summit in April, was the top seed in the TOC. The Maroons finished 20-3.

Summit ends the season at 24-1, with its only defeat against a team from Virginia. It's the first Tournament of Champions title for the Hilltoppers, who last finished as New Jersey's #1 girls' lacrosse team in 1999, before the creation of the TOC.
