VIDEO: New Milford impresses in semifinal win over Becton
Written by - Friday, November 18 2016

All season, the New Milford football team has been a force on offense, piling up more than 30 points per game. But now the Knights are also getting the job done defensively, and that has propelled them to MetLife Stadium.

With Christian Correa racking up another huge rushing game, New Milford handled Becton 27-8 in the semifinals of North 1, Group I. Correa ran 38 times for 226 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Along the way, he established a new single-season school rushing record, now with 2,279 yards for the year.

And Correa and his teammates now have another game to play. They'll take on Hasbrouck Heights in the sectional final on Sunday, December 4 at MetLife Stadium. Game time is 10:00 am.

With Correa doing much of the work, New Milford scored on its first two drives to take a quick 14-0 lead. Ryan Picinic completed a couple of key passes along the way, including a 24-yarder to Matt McElroy for the second touchdown.

The Knights' defense made the big plays in the second quarter. One promising Becton drive stalled out in New Milford territory early in the period. Then when the Wildcats got the ball back, Justin Hugerich made an interception and ran it back 48 yards for a score to make it 20-0 at the half.

Picinic completed 4-of-8 passes on the night for 80 yards and the one score. McElroy had two catches for 63 yards along with the TD.

Brett Kornberg made eight tackles, and McElroy had seven tackles with a sack for the Knights.

Michael Bolwell threw for 109 yards for Becton, the third seed. Dustin DeRado was the leading receiver with 44 yards, and scored the Wildcats' only touchdown on a three-yard run in the final minute of the game.

Becton, which won a divisional title this season, finishes with a 7-3 record.

New Milford is now 8-2. After finishing third in its division of the NJIC, the Knights have rolled off four straight wins to reach the sectional final. Now New Milford will face the NJIC league champions, top seed Hasbrouck Heights, in the final.
