DePaul started the ice hockey season with a shutout of Wayne Valley in a very physical contest, played at the Ice Vault in Wayne. From the start DePaul looked strong and the more experienced unit. Wayne Valley on the other hand showed tremendous grit but lacked scoring chances.

The first period had very few opportunities and neither team created many quality chances. DePaul however had the edge and outshot Wayne Valley 11-3. Both teams failed on two power plays.
Early in the second period DePaul came out aggressively, and their efforts paid off with a goal by junior forward Peter Ross on a rebound of a shot from the point. The Spartans had more chances to extend the lead but were denied numerous times by Indians goalie
The third period was very physical and DePaul's size advantage became apparent. DePaul was awarded a couple of power plays in the period off retaliations by Wayne Valley. Halfway through the period DePaul’s power play yielded their second goal of the game. Senior forward Scott Steinel scored off a 3-on-1 breakaway. Goalie Matt Fantuzzi had a relatively easy night facing only 14 shots by Wayne Valley.
Indians coach Dan Kilday commended his young squad and praised their effort on the ice. Wayne Valley played well, not allowing an experienced opponent many odd man rushes on turnovers. Coach Kilday stated that he feels very encouraged by what he saw, but added that his team has plenty of work ahead.
DePaul has the much of its team returning from last season. One player coach Frank Krause is especially happy to have coming back is junior forward Joey Redmon, sidelined all of last season due to a knee injury. Redmon was the team’s leading scorer as a freshman and is looking to pick up where he left off. Coach Krause expects to have a very strong season and felt his team made a strong statement in this season opener. -- Emir Liguori
