Hopatcong has enjoyed another fine baseball season, and the Chiefs got off on the right foot in the state playoffs. With Hunter Guard throwing a complete game and some excellent defense, Hopatcong upset Dumont 4-1 in the first round. Frank Fendrock had a two-run double in the first inning for the Chiefs. Ryan Frace went 3-for-4 with an RBI double, and Ryan 'Scootie' Fischer had a triple.
Guard allowed just four hits and struck out six, although he got into trouble several times due to wildness. But the Chiefs defense helped bail him out with some great plays. The game was moved to Cliffside Park High School due to poor field conditions at Dumont because of this week's rain.
