Pequannock didn't draw a lot of notice entering the state tournament despite a solid 13-6-1 record. Now the ninth-seeded Panthers are just two wins away from a sectional title. After falling two runs behind in the fourth inning, Pequannock stormed back to defeat Pascack Hills 10-4 in the North 1, Group II sectional quarterfinals. Shawn Lane drove in three runs for the Panthers and Jake Dericks had a two-run double.
With their top pitcher unable to take the mound, Pequannock used three hurlers in this game. Dan Short came on to get a key out in the fourth and ended up getting the win, pitching two-and-a-third shutout innings. The Cowboys led 4-2 going to the bottom of the fourth, but the Panthers answered with four runs, helped out by a key error. Pequannock then put the game away in the bottom of the fifth with three more runs. The Panthers got to play this game at home when Pascack Hills, the 16th seed, upset top seed North Warren in the first round. Pequannock will take on either River Dell or Ramsey in the sectional semifinals. For sports video highlights of this state tournament baseball game, click play in the box at left. |
