Finishing with a flourish, the Wayne Valley girls' volleyball team marched into the second round of the Group III state tournament with a two-game victory over visiting Roxbury. The scores were 25-18 and 25-22. After pulling away to win the first game, Wayne Valley fell behind badly in the second. Roxbury won the first 10 points and eventually built a 17-4 lead. But the Indians came storming back, tying the score at 20 apiece and then finishing it off to clinch the victory.
Olivia Pantale led Wayne Valley, the 12th seed, with six kills, while Melissa Ziegler had five. Nicole Paduano had 15 digs and a pair of aces. Lauren Kornmann recorded four kills and four blocks for 21st-seeded Roxbury. Sydney Clevenger had six assists and two aces for the Gaels, who finish the season at 14-11. Wayne Valley is now 19-6, but will face a tough challenge in its next match, when it travels to face fifth seed Northern Highlands in the second round.
