It looks like West Milford is for real in 2014. The Highlanders shook off a slow start to pull off a stunning 28-21 comeback victory over Wayne Valley. Down 14 points early in the final quarter, West Milford scored three straight times to pull out a dramatic win and improve to 3-1 on the season.
Aaron Furnbach threw three touchdown passes for the Highlanders to spur the rally. Furnbach went 22-of-39 on the night for 254 yards. Corey Curran caught eight of those passes for 70 yards and two scores. West Milford didn't get much going on the ground, but Nick Bakalian scored the winning touchdown on a 9-yard run. Wayne Valley burst out to a 14-0 lead, scoring on its first two possessions of the game. Mark DeLuise capped both drives with short scoring runs. But the Indians were held in check for most of the rest of the game, managing just one more touchdown on a Nick Goodwin pass to Andrew Popadics. The stunning turn of events had a major impact on the state playoff picture for both teams. West Milford is now in strong position in North 1, Group III, while Wayne Valley falls to 2-2 and now faces a tough battle to make the playoffs in North 1, Group IV.
