The West Essex softball team has been on a roll lately, and that run continues in its state tournament game against Wayne Valley. With Sami Huetter pitching a six-inning no-hitter, the Knights scored a 10-0 triumph to advance to the sectional semifinals. Huetter allowed just one walk while striking out six batters. She was also one of the hitting stars of the contest, going 3-for-4 with four RBI. Huetter's line drive that one-hopped the fence in the bottom of the sixth brought home two runs and ended the game via the mercy rule.
Bridget Betley also went 3-for-4, driving in two runs and scoring twice. Kate Jencarelli, Alexa Vardiman and Julia Vardiman all went 2-for-4, and each drove in one run and scored twice. Lilly James added an RBI double for the Knights, the top seed in North 1, Group III. Wayne Valley, seeded eighth, sees its season end with an 11-14 record. West Essex is now 24-2. The Knights, who recently captured the Essex County tournament title, will face Indian Hills in the next round of the states.
