Coach Jason Carcich challenged his Wayne Valley boys' volleyball players to play the game of their lives in the sectional final against Fair Lawn. It appears they lived up to the challenge. Wayne Valley won its first-ever sectional title in impressive fashion against the top-seeded Cutters, sweeping to a 25-21, 25-13 victory. The Indians ended Fair Lawn's six-year reign as sectional champs with the triumph.
David Ahn led Wayne Valley with seven kills, most coming in the second game as the Indians stormed to victory. Mike Foglia had five kills, while Ryan VanDemark notched four kills and three blocks. Matt Widovic recorded 19 assists, Justin Korman had 13 digs, and Alex Kasperowicz contributed eight digs and two aces. After falling behind early in the first game, Fair Lawn made a comeback behind the hitting of Sebastian Mirabal and Zach Berkowitz. But the Cutters could get no closer than two points. Mirabal ended with eight kills and Berkowitz six for Fair Lawn. Raysean Graham had two kills and two blocks, and Dean Bass notched 17 assists. Fair Lawn finishes the season with a 29-7 record. Wayne Valley, which was the second seed in the North 1 section, is now 29-2 on the season. The Indians will take on Southern Regional, one of the only teams to defeat them this year, in the state semifinals.
