VIDEO: Franklyn's wonder strike lifts Bergen Catholic by Wayne Valley | ||

Both teams had a number of quality chances in the boys' soccer tilt between Bergen Catholic and Wayne Valley. But the only goal of the game came from what looked like half a chance at best. Miles Franklyn's wonder strike--a swerving, dipping shot into the upper corner from some 30 yards away--provided the Crusaders with the 1-0 road victory. Bergen Catholic held on in the final minutes of the game to improve to 4-0 on the season.
The goal by Franklyn was recogized on ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10 plays of the day. The Crusaders seemingly had doubled their lead late in the first half when Stephen Teitelbaum slotted home a penalty kick. But one of the referees waved it off after spotting some pushing and shoving before the kick was taken. On the re-kick, Wayne Valley goalie Eric Lee came up with a save. Nick Vafiadis had three saves to earn the shutout for Bergen Catholic. He was twice helped out by the crossbar as Wayne Valley came close to evening the score in the final 20 minutes of the game. The Indians fall to 2-2-1. For sports video highlights of this New Jersey and Big North Conference high school boys' soccer game, click play in the box at left. |
