Montclair Kimberley erased a 10-point deficit in the third quarter, then held on down the stretch to win its season-opening girls' basketball contest. The Cougars pulled out a 49-46 road victory over Cedar Grove. Kerri McGuire led MKA with 18 points. Erin Nicholson added 13, including a three-point bomb just before the buzzer to end the third period that gave the Cougars the lead for good.
Amanda Mack added nine points for MKA, including a pair of clutch free throws in the final seconds. Cedar Grove led 28-21 at halftime, and stretched the lead to 10 in the opening moments after the break. Alyssa Lever was the leading scorer for the Panthers with 16 points, including four three-pointers. Jessica Sinisi scored 10 points for Cedar Grove, while Ava Mandala had seven points and nine assists. Both teams are part of the Colonial Division of the Super Essex Conference.
