Big games from Justin Rodriguez and Brian Monaghan lifted Morristown-Beard to the championship of the NJAC Liberty Division in boys' basketball. The Crimson avenged an earlier defeat by knocking off Mountain Lakes, 51-43. Rodriguez made five three-pointers and finished with 22 points to lead Morristown-Beard. Monaghan came up big in the fourth quarter as the Crimson held off the Lakers; he ended up with 18 points overall.
Ryan Russo added nine points as three players combined for all but two of the Crimson's points. Raphael Castillo did not score, but had nine rebounds and a key steal late in the contest. Mountain Lakes cut a nine-point third-quarter deficit to one point, but never could quite draw even in the second half. Jake Schicke had a huge game for the Lakers, scoring 24 points. Jack Baker notched 10 points for Mountain Lakes and Tom Gleeson added seven. The Lakers fall to 15-5, and are 6-2 in the Liberty Division. Morristown-Beard is now 17-3. With a 9-1 record, the Crimson have completed divisional play and locked up the title. They will now continue competing in both the Morris County and Prep B tournaments.
