Wayne Hills dug itself out of a 17-point hole in the fourth quarter to earn a remarkable girls' basketball win over its crosstown rival. The Patriots charged back to pull out a 44-43 win over Wayne Valley and earn a share of a division title. Amanda LaGuardia scored 11 points, including the tie-breaking free throw with just four seconds left. Taylor Rodriguez also scored 11 points, while Dana Eljouzi added 10 for the Patriots.
Rachel Vellis recorded eight points and 14 rebounds for Wayne Hills, which scored 23 of its 44 points at the free-throw line. Wayne Valley built a 39-22 lead after three quarters, but the Patriots put together a 19-1 run to take the lead with a minute left. A three-point play by Alexa Simonetti moved the Indians back in front, but Rodriguez hit two free throws to tie the score. Then after a turnover, LaGuardia drew a foul on a drive to the hoop and hit the second of two free throws to win it. Lexi Piotrowski led Wayne Valley with 16 points. Carson Thomas scored nine and Simonetti had eight for the Indians, who fall to 8-12. Wayne Hills is 13-6, and finished 8-2 in the Big North Conference's Independence Division.
