With all the drama surrounding this Morristown-Beard boys' basketball season, the Crimson wanted the hardware to show for their efforts. In yet another down-to-the-wire thriller, the Crimson earned the state Prep B title with a 92-85 overtime win over Doane Academy. Morristown-Beard erased several deficits in regulation, then dominated the overtime period to earn the third Prep title in program history. Justin Rodriguez led the Crimson with 31 points, including a remarkable 19-of-20 from the foul line. Rodriguez also had eight rebounds and seven assists.
Raphael Castillo also had a huge game, scoring 26 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Brian Monaghan had 16 points and Ryan Russo scored 10 for the Crimson. Morristown-Beard had lost the last two Prep B finals before winning this title. The players have dedicated this season to coach Eddie Franz, who was diagnosed with cancer just a few weeks ago but has returned to coach the team in the past couple of games. Doane Academy raced out to a 10-point first quarter lead, only to see it erased. The top-seeded Spartans built smaller leads in both the second and third periods, but again the visiting Crimson rallied each time. Chase Lane led Doane with 21 points. Tyrese Myrick scored 20, while Nick Saint-Juste and Damon Wall had 16 points apiece. The Spartans, who have never won the Prep state title, fall to 18-4. Morristown-Beard is now 22-3. The Crimson will look to win its first-ever Morris County title this weekend when it meets Chatham in the tournament final.
