For the second straight game, Matt Brown played the hero in overtime as Tenafly/Cresskill continued a memorable ice hockey season. Brown scored on a one-timer just 1:23 into sudden death to lift the Tigers past Montclair, 2-1, to advance in the state tournament. Brown's goal, off assists from Michael Anderson and Michael Ranaldi, ended a defensive struggle at the Mackay Park arena in Englewood. Both teams scored in the opening seven minutes of the game but could not find the net again until the extra period.
Julian Tallier had Tenafly's other goal, with assists from Ranaldi and Andy Chang. That goal tied the score less than three minutes after Kellum Foster-Palmer put Montclair ahead. The rest of the game belonged to the goalies. Kyle Picinic made 21 saves for Tenafly, while Ondrej Smalec saved 23 shots for Montclair. Smalec made several big stops in the third period to keep the Mounties in the game, but had no chance on Brown's game-winner. The 23 saves gave Smalec over 2,000 in his high school career, as he started nearly all of Montclair's games during his four years. Montclair, the 19th seed in the Public A state playoffs, finishes 8-10-5. Tenafly, seeded 14th, improves to 15-8-2. That total includes the Big North Silver Cup final, which the Tigers won on another Brown overtime goal just four days earlier. Next up, Tenafly faces third seed Randolph in the Round of 16.
