Both teams in this sectional quarterfinal match-up had been enjoying their most-successful seasons ever, but the dream could only live on for one. Keyed by a 10-point run in the third quarter, Morristown-Beard kept its season alive with an exciting 62-60 win over Christ the King Prep. The fourth-seeded Crimson led by as many as 13 points before Christ the King rallied to cut the deficit to two. But Morristown-Beard managed to hang on in the final three minutes to pull out the win.
With the victory, the Crimson advance to face perennial powerhouse, and top seed, St. Anthony in the North Non-Public A semifinals. Raphael Castillo kept Morristown-Beard in the game during a slow start, scoring all nine of his team's points in the first quarter. Despite later foul trouble, Castillo ended up with a team-high 16 points and nine rebounds. Brian Monaghan scored 14 points, including a key sequence in the final minutes where he hit two free throws, then made a steal and finished at the other end with a dunk to effectively put the game away. Monaghan added six assists and seven rebounds for the Crimson. Ryan Russo also had 14 points, while Justin Rodriguez scored 10 and contributed eight assists for Morristown-Beard. Alonzo Herran sank six three-pointers to help keep fifth-seeded Christ the King in the contest. Herran ended with 20 points and four steals. Emmanuel Toha scored 18 points for the Knights, while Najee Pride had 13 points and 11 rebounds. Christ the King, which won a divisional title this season, ended up 23-5. Morristown-Beard is now 25-4. The Crimson will travel to meet St. Anthony, which has lost a few games this season but is still ranked #6 in New Jersey, on Monday.
