The way Bergen Catholic wrestled against archrival Don Bosco Prep in the sectional semifinals, it's hard to imagine anyone stopping them from winning a fourth straight state title. Against a team that gave them a major scare just two weeks earlier, the top-seeded Crusaders dominated en route to a 42-15 triumph. Bergen Catholic won 10 of 14 bouts and never let the Ironmen into the wrestling match.
With the competition starting at 106 pounds, Bergen Catholic won the first five weight classes to race out to a 20-0 lead. The Crusaders reversed three of the bout results from their regular-season meeting with Don Bosco and also conceded fewer bonus points than that January 29th match-up. Joe Grello and Danny DeLorenzi had pins for Bergen Catholic, while Carmen Ferrante scored a technical fall. Don Bosco also chose to forfeit to BC's 120-pound superstar, Nick Suriano. The main bright spot for the fourth-seeded Ironmen was in the upper weights, as the Chakonis brothers scored wins at 220 and 285. Zack Chakonis recorded a pin at heavyweight. Don Bosco falls to 13-3 in dual meets this season. Bergen Catholic is now 13-2, and hasn't lost to an NJSIAA opponent in some three years. The Crusaders will seek a fourth straight Non-Public A state wrestling title; they next face St. Peter's Prep in the sectional final on Friday evening.
