Coming from seven points down in the fourth quarter, Montclair earned a first-round girls' basketball state tournament victory over Fair Lawn. Alisa Wiggins led the Mounties as they pulled out the 44-38 road triumph. Wiggins had 23 points, including four foul shots in the final seconds to ice the win for Montclair. Bianca Fede added nine for the Mounties, and scored a pair of key baskets in the fourth quarter, in which Montclair outscored Fair Lawn 17-4.
Katie Higgins hit a pair of crucial free throws in the final minute and ended up with eight points. Fair Lawn fell behind early, but surged into the lead with a strong second quarter. The eighth-seeded Cutters struggled offensively throughout the second half, but held onto the lead until less than three minutes remained in the contest. Alexis Kriley led Fair Lawn with 10 points. Nancy Ruf scored nine and Alison Hyde had six for the Cutters, who finish the season 11-13. Ninth seed Montclair is now 14-11; the Mounties move on to face Morristown, the top seed in the North 1, Group IV sectional bracket.
