In an incredible shooting display, Newark Tech made seven three-pointers in the third quarter to key a sectional quarterfinal girls' basketball win. The eighth-seeded Terriers took down top seed Hanover Park, 63-48. Trailing by three points at halftime, Newark Tech outscored the Hornets 26-13 in that third quarter to seize control, and were never seriously threatened in the final period. The Terriers made a total of 10 treys in the game.
This was not as huge an upset as the seeds would indicate. Newark Tech is the defending North 2, Group II sectional champion and were picked by some to win again this year. Still, the Terriers had to win on the road against a team that had 22 wins this season. Abbey Lawrence had three of the Newark Tech treys and scored 17 points. Zianna Goda made four three-pointers as part of her 14-point effort, while Dayjah Anderson had two treys and 10 points total. The Terriers also had a key inside presence in the person of Mariah Perez. Perez shared the team high with 17 points and also grabbed 18 rebounds. Ava Gammo had a game-high 19 points for Hanover Park. Alexa Bursese and Alexa Petrozzino scored 10 points apiece. The Hornets finish their season with a 22-5 record. Newark Tech started out with a 4-10 record, but caught fire in the second half of the season. The Terriers have only one loss since then, a narrow defeat to East Orange in the Essex County Tournament final, and are 16-11 overall. Next up, Newark Tech visits Rutherford in the North 2, Group II sectional semifinals.
