For six innings, rally after rally died thanks to pitching and defense in the North 1, Group IV sectional final. But in the top of the seventh, Randolph finally made the most of a scoring chance and earned itself a sectional championship. Scoring six runs after two men were out, the Rams broke open a tie game and went on to a 7-2 win over Wayne Valley. It's the first sectional baseball title for Randolph in three years.
Thomas Asbaty drove in the tie-breaking run with a sacrifice fly. Matt Iantosca followed with an RBI double, and Brian Boulineau had a two-run single. Two more runs scored on an infield hit by Tyler Poulin to cap the big inning. Poulin faced numerous jams on the mound for Randolph as he allowed 11 hits on the day. But he was helped out by two double plays and a pair of excellent catches in the outfield. Mike D'Amato was writing a similar story on the hill for Wayne Valley, allowing just one run over the first six innings. Chris Santaniello drove in both runs for the Indians, who came up just short of their first sectional title since 1974. Randolph moves on to the Group IV state semifinals where it will take on Westfield, the surprise winner of the North 2 section. That game is slated for Tuesday afternoon at Ramapo College.
